Fans ofFortnite’s Trios mode will have to find a new favorite mode to play in the popular Battle Royale shooter, as Epic has announced that Trios has been vaulted with the release of update v24.40. The removal of the popular game mode is just one of many major changes to come to the free-to-play shooter as part ofFortnite’s latest update.
Released in 2017 as an early access title,Fortnitehas grown to dominate the Battle Royale market in recent years thanks in part to a steady stream of updates and ingenious pop-culture crossovers. The popularity of Epic’s free-to-play shooter even helped it make the shortlist of titles chosen by the International Olympic Committee to bring competitive gaming to the global stage, withFortnitejoining the Olympic Esports Series 2023competition later this year. Originally introduced as a limited-time mode before being added as a core mode with the release ofFortniteChapter 2: Season 5, Trios mode let teams of three players go up against 32 other teams in a 99-player Battle Royale match.

In a new tweet from the official Fortnite Status account, Epic reminded players that Trios mode has been vaulted with the release ofFortnitev24.40. One of the most significant updates to the popular Battle Royale title in recent memory, v24.40 also makes some majorchanges to materials and harvesting inFortnite. While gameplay changes accompanying the release of v24.40 have already proven to be controversial with someFortniteplayers, many of the updates to Epic’s shooter appear to be in service of ensuring thatFortnite’s new Ranked Play mode will not only have a large playerbase but also deliver a balanced experience for gamers.
Responses on Twitter to the removal of Trios mode as part ofFortnite’s Ranked Play updatewere decidedly mixed, with many players sad to see the three-player mode going away. One disappointed player claimed that Trios mode tended to have more balanced matches in their experience, stating thatFortnite’s skill-based matchmaking made other modes frustrating to play. SomeFortnitefans appeared determined to continue playing with their two favorite teammates even after the removal of Trios mode, even if it put them at a competitive disadvantage, pointing out that it’s possible to join Squad mode with a three-person team and turn off team fill.
Like with countless past updates toFortniteover the years, this latest round of changes appears to be rubbing some players the wrong way. But even as someFortnitefans decry the loss of Trios mode, the new Ranked Play features already appear to be reigniting interest in the game and potentially opening the door to a flood of new players. And while losing access to a favorite game mode is never a fun experience, it’s precisely this sort of constant retooling and reinvention that has helpedFortnitebecome the gaming and cultural phenomenon it is today.
