While Valve’s game output isn’t as big as it was in the mid-2000s, the Washington-based developer has plenty of IPs that are beloved to this day. One of these is the seminal first-person puzzle gamePortal, with the puzzles and witty writing still holding up. Fans have maintained interest in the franchise through mods and fanmade creations, ranging from completeoverhauls ofPortal 2to a demake that makes it look like it was built for the Nintendo 64.

Fanmade demakes have been blowing up in various video game communities, with many wondering what a modern game would look like if it was constrained to the hardware limitations of an older platform. Fans have shown off how games likeElden Ring,Bloodborne, or evenThe Stanley Parablewould look like as a demake, complete with graphics and sound that would be possible on certain consoles or engines. Now one YouTuber is showing what Portal would look like if it was released on the Nintendo 64.

ThisfanmadePortalN64 demakewas created by James Lambert, who had been working on this project for quite some time. One of the biggest hurdles was getting the player to be able to walk through the game’s titular portals, which he demonstrated in a past video. The latest update he shares with fans was the portal gun, the main method of creating portals in-game.

This video shows that thisPortaldemake can have the player create portals and travel through them with no issues, with the amount of portal layers being rendered as the video goes on. By the end of the video, the demake can render up to 14 portals within portals layers. He notes that this is being demonstrated on actual Nintendo 64 hardware as well, with the frame rate and rendering of the portals still being quite smooth as well.

Lambert notes that it is still in-development, as some aspects ofthe portal gunand its aesthetics are lacking. This includes the particle effects of when a portal has hit a wall, the portal itself scaling when it has opened and hit the wall, and even the sound effects are missing. He notes that the main hurdle regarding the demake was the game’s engine, as well as how the levels can be imported into the demake. Lambert also promises that the next update will be much bigger now that the core design of the demake has been laid out.
