Summary
Fallout: New VegasdeveloperObsidian Entertainmentis seemingly working on a “cross-platform RPG” built using Unreal Engine.Obsidian Entertainmentwas founded over 20 years ago and has gone on to develop some of the most popular and iconic RPGs of all time. Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, and since then, the studio has continued to release critically-acclaimed work.
Obsidian’s first Xbox-published game was the survival gameGrounded, a title that combines typical survival game elements with aHoney, I Shrunk the Kidspremise.Groundedwas followed up by the narrative-driven RPGPentiment, which released to rave reviews in 2022.Action-RPGAvowedis next up for Obsidian, with the highly-anticipated game expected to launch later this year for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
WithObsidian owned by Xbox, it makes sense for its games to be released as Xbox console exclusives, which is seemingly the plan withAvowed. However, a future Obsidian RPG could be a multi-platform release, opening the door for it possibly appearing on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles as well. This is according to a job listing for a Senior Environment Artist where Obsidian plainly states that it is looking for someone to create “aesthetically pleasing environments for a cross-platform RPG.” Of course, “cross-platform"couldbe referring to just PC and Xbox, but there is already precedent for Xbox-published Obsidian games to be released on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles.
Obsidian Hiring Artist for ‘Cross-Platform’ RPG
Xbox recently started experimenting withbringing its first-party games to competing consoles. It picked four games to start with, two of which were Obsidian titles. BothGroundedandPentimenthave been released for PS4, PS5, and Switch, and so it stands to reason that future Obsidian games will make the jump as well, though it’s unclear if they will be multi-platform at launch or if some time will pass before they eventually come to competing consoles.
With Microsoft spending so much timepushingAvowedas an Xbox console exclusive, it’s hard to see the game suddenly becoming a multi-plat release for launch. On the other hand, it wouldn’t be outlandish forThe Outer Worlds 2to be multi-plat at launch. After all, the firstOuter Worldsgame was a multi-platform release, and so there is already a built-in audience for the sequel on competing platforms.
Some Obsidian fans on non-Xbox consoles will be hoping that this job listing points in the direction of aFallout: New Vegassequelor a remake of the beloved 2010 game. There have been rumors and rumblings about a grand return toNew Vegasof some kind, but nothing official to that effect has been announced at the time of this writing.
