Final Fantasy 9, 10, and Tactics Are Prime Contenders For the Remake Treatment

Final Fantasy 9,10, andTacticshave been points of discussion in regard to their viability for the remake treatment. Recent years have seen these rumors more prevalent;the fanmade proof of conceptFinal Fantasy 9: Memoria Project, for example, showed an astonishingly beautiful look of how well the title could translate to Unreal Engine 5. Its art style felt as whimsical asKingdom Hearts 3’s Kingdom of Corona, while its swelling music and detailed characters created a sense of nostalgia for those across the fanbase. Many have been quick to point out that the title could be a highly successful endeavor for Square Enix, which the company may be taking into consideration.

Leaks from Nvidia GeForce Now suggest that aFinal Fantasy 9remakecould be announced before the year is over, with the potential for an updatedFinal Fantasy Tacticsremaster to be included as well. The latter would be a clever choice for the company, givenFinal Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions' release for the PSP back in 2007 and its smartphone port back in 2011, though no official announcements have been made on its development. As theFinal Fantasyseries appears to be moving away from its turn-based influences, at least in its mainline titles, anFF9remake true to its initial combat mechanics or aTacticsremaster could be quite refreshing for longtime fans of the series.

The same could be said for a fullFinal Fantasy 10remake, as the jointHD remaster forFF10andFF10-2first debuted for the PS4 and Vita nearly ten years ago in Japan. The originalFF10is over 22 years old now, though its story, setting, and turn-based mechanics still hold up exceptionally well, cementing the title as a favorite among fans of the series. There have been additional leaks regarding anFF10remake’s existence, which is said to be in development by a “skeleton crew,” though the lack of any official confirmation keeps this as mere speculation. Still, the prospect of the title has left many hopeful of returning to Spira once again.

Of course, there are other contenders for the remake treatment, likeFF8orFF13’s trilogy, though they aren’t quite as coveted as anFF9or10remake. Additionally, the prospect of remaking an entire trilogy’s worth of content would be a substantial obstacle for Square Enix to overcome, as is the case withFF10-2, which may or may not beincluded within anFF10remake. While it is currently unclear as to where the company will land next, fans remain excited to see how Square Enix may bring these belovedFinal Fantasytales back into the limelight.
