Dungeons and Dragons' 2024 revision will arrive in September 2024, with the redonePlayer’s Handbookdropping that month. Among the updated classes found in that book,Dungeons and Dragons' Sorcerer class is slated for some interesting changes.
D&D 5e’s Sorcerer classis an interesting case, with many calling it one of the weaker full casters. However, its Metamagic feature gives it a great deal of potential, allowing players to change spells in strange and powerful ways. From subtle spells that can be cast undetected to bonus action casts for extra damage, the Sorcerer has some great utility and the means to be a strong DPS class. Like the Warlock, the Sorcerer is also a favorite for multiclassing thanks to its subclass being at first level (as well as its Charisma-based spellcasting ability).
Every Change Coming With D&D 2024’s New Sorcerer
Innate Sorcery
With its subclasses shunted to third level,D&D 2024’s class revisions haveinstead granted theSsorcerer a new breakout ability at level 1. Innate Sorcery is, essentially, a spellcasting version of the Barbarian’s Rage; it’s a minute-long power state that will increase the Sorcerer’s Spell Save DC and give them advantage on attack rolls with Sorcerer spells. 7th level Sorcerers can use two Metamagic options on one spell while in this state, while 20th level Sorcerers can use metamagic for free while the state is active.
The Sorcerer can use this feature twice per long rest until level 7, where the sorcerer gains the ability to use their Sorcery Points to regain uses of Innate Sorcery. This is a great boon for this new state of magical power, and it also creates some synergy with the Sorcerer’s ability to turn spell slots into Sorcery Points and vice versa. This new feature is definitely a sweeping class change, perhaps one of themost redefining ofD&D 2024. Other classes have seen some tectonic shifts, particularly the monk, but the addition of an entire new class resource is on another level entirely; only Weapon Masteries really come close here.
Sorcery Point Changes
This new sorcerer has even more resources to balance when compared tothe Sorcerer ofD&D 5e, so its lucky that the Sorcerous Restoration feature at level 5 has been added. This feature will allow the sorcerer to regain some expended Sorcery Points on a short rest – or when initiative is rolled if the Sorcerer has none left. Font of Magic and Metamagic are both moved to level 2, and the Sorcerer will receive new and reworked metamagic options.
Subclass Improvements
InD&D 2024’s series of fixes, the Aberrant and Clockwork subclasses (ported over fromTasha’s Cauldron of Everything) have gone mostly untouched. However, the Draconic Sorcerer will be getting its own spell list, bringing it in-line with the other two. In addition, the subclass will grant an improved base AC buff as well as 1 extra hit point for every Sorcerer level a character has. Otherwise, the subclass is mostly just tightened up from its 2014 iteration.
The Wild Magic Sorcerer saw far greater changes.A favorite ofD&D 5e, the Wild Magic Sorcerer has had its Wild Magic table tied more to the player’s actions, without the qualifier that the DM controls when the player rolls on the table. Of course, the DM still has the final say on anything in the game, but now the player has more control over getting to roll on the table as opposed to the system being left to DM fiat. The subclass will also get a new Tamed Surge feature, allowing it to occasionally choose a guaranteed effect from the revised Wild Magic table.
