The latestDragon Ball Zgaming adventure has arrived in the form ofDragon Ball Z: Kakarot.Bandai Namco’s latest retelling of theDBZsagas are letting old fans re-experience their favorite show while also introducing a younger generation of gamers to the classic anime. But some fans are taking issue withchanges the game makes to theDragon Ball Zcanonand a new retcon has just been identified.
The retcon in question addresses Goku’s ex-rival and everyone’s favorite Namekian Piccolo. In the original anime and manga, Piccolo destroyed the moon in order to stop Gohan’s Oozaru rampage early on in the Saiyan saga. This was a moment that showed just how much power Piccolo had, butDragon Ball Z: Kakarotundercuts this moment in an in-game episode summary.

InKakarot, it turns out that Piccolo did not in fact destroy the moon and instead created an illusion that made it only appear that it had been destroyed. This information is conveyed to the player via a text log that summarizes Episode 3. Revealed on Twitter by @DragonBallBLK, this information directly contradicts dialogue from later in the show.
In the original series, Piccolo confirmed that he indeed destroyed the moon and the only time an “illusion” of the moon was used was when he destroyed the Space Pod. Goku’s Space pod projected the image of a moon which made Gohan transform into a Great Ape. When Piccolo destroyed the Space pod the projector was destroyed and it was confirmed that he had, in fact, already destroyed the moon. This was later reaffirmed whenVegetaneeded to use the Power Ball, which is an energy sphere meant to mimic the presence of the moon and its effects on Saiyans, in the fight against Goku.
Reviews and reception forDBZ: Kakarothave been a bit all over the place. Diehard fans of the anime seem to be mostly pleased and some outlets likeFamistu in Japan reviewed it very favorablywhile others criticized its lack of innovation and polish. The game is retelling the epic story ofDragon Ball Z, but is making some minor changes that fans will notice and may not approve of. Only time will tell as more players get their hands on the game and play it to completion over the next handful of weeks.
