Flemeth is one of the most interesting recurring characters of BioWare’sDragon Ageseries. While she may appear as an old woman at first, it immediately becomes apparent that there is far more to her. She is a shapeshifter, a legend, and a witch with many daughters and a past that fans have been piecing together sinceDragon Age: Origins.

Theories have spread both in-game and on the Internet of who Flemeth really is and what her true intentions are. In the first game, it was revealed that she wanted an old god baby, and later on, inInquisition, it was revealed that she carries the soul of Mythal, an ancient elf who was apparently murdered by her own people. The witch is full of surprises, so whenDragon Age 4arrives, fans best be prepared for anything.

Flemeth’s History

Much like folklore, Flemeth’s history has different versions, and it is not yet clear which version is the truest. According to hercodex inDragon Age: Origins, Flemeth was once known Flemeth of Highever in the Towers Age. She was married to Bann Conobar but fell in love with a poet named Osen. She and Osen ran away together and lived among the Chasinds until they heard Bann Conobar was dying and wanted to see Flemeth one last time. When she and Osen came to visit him, though, it was a trap, and he killed Osen.

The codex goes on to say that Flemeth was locked in a tower. She knew magic andsummoned a spiritto help her have her revenge against her husband. The spirit turned her into an abomination, and she slaughtered Conobar and all else in his castle and fled to the Wilds. From there, she sired many daughters until most were killed by Cormac of the Alamarri tribes.

While the codex provides some insight into Flemeth’s background, it cannot be completely believed for a number of reasons. Firstly, Brother Genitivi has mentioned no records of a Flemeth of Highever or Bann Conobar ever existed. Morrigan has a different spin on the story, saying that Flemeth was actually the wife of a poor bard named Osen and a Lord Conobar fell in love with Flemeth. According toMorrigan’s version, Conobar offered Osen wealth in exchange for Flemeth, and he agreed. However, Conobar betrayed Osen and killed him once Flemeth was traded. Flemeth used spirits to kill Conobar in a fit of revenge and later made a deal with a demon she found in the Wilds to slay the rest of his men that chased her. Morrigan also says that Cormac never fought Flemeth.

Her Connection To Mythal And Her Daughters

InDragon Age: Inquisition, Flemeth reveals that she carries the spirit of Mythal with her. While her background is still a mystery, she admitted one element was true: that she asked a spirit to help her get revenge and Mythal answered and possessed her. Flemeth claims that she and Mythal share a backstory of betrayal, which makes it seem likely that theDragon Age: Originscodex does have truth in it. This means that Flemeth likely knows much of the ancient elves as Solas does. It is also shown at the end ofInquisitionthat she and Solas are close, and it seems that it is because of her connection to Mythal.

Outside of Morrigan, the only other daughter met of Flemeth’s has been in theDragon Agecomics: Yavana. However, she likely will not appear in the games because Alistair kills her. What is known about Flemeth’s daughters is that she possesses their bodies and that is how she has lived so long. This was found out inOrigins, but is revisited inInquisition, and it is pointed out that the daughters have willingly let Flemeth possess them and that Flemeth could not possess the unwilling. This had the implication that the daughters feel there is a good reason for Flemeth to possess them, but those reasons are still unknown toDragon Agefans.

Theories

While it appears as though Flemeth died at the end ofDragon Age: Inquisitionby giving her power to Solas, most fans do not buy that she is actually dead. Fans believe, as she proved inDragon Age 2when she pops out of an amulet that she gave to Hawke, that Flemeth has hidden parts of herself around Thedas. In fact, she is seen pushing some sort of energy from herself through an Eluvian beforeSolas takes her power(it is likely she willingly gave it). Fans believe that could be part of Flemeth or the old god baby soul that she took from Kieran (if players did the ritual inOrigins).

It is debated how much Flemeth and Solas have in common in terms of motivations. She appeared to willingly give a part of herself to him, which would make sense because she also would dislikethe Evanurisfor killing Mythal and would support Solas' plan to be rid of them. On the other hand, Flemeth has lived and experienced Thedas in a way Solas lacks and especially has a connection to people like the Dalish and Chasind. Due to this, fans wonder if she has ulterior motives that Solas is unaware of.
