Shrines remain one of the most popular beneficial combat boons inDiablo 4, but according to a large part of the player base, one shrine buff in particular seems to be underperforming and in need of a rework.ARPG titles likeDiablo 4rely on dynamic eventsto constantly keep the flow of the gameplay refreshing. The Shrines inDiablo 4are one of these dynamic mechanics that occassionally appear and let players decimate their enemies.
Shrines provide players with temporary boons, with each of the seven Shrines offering unique beneficial combat effects and a 25% increase in movement speed upon activation that can be stacked with other movement speed-altering buffs. Later in the game, players can encounter altered versions of Shrines, namely the Defaced and Cursed Shrines, which only appear in dungeons and present players with small objectives to gain access to the beneficial effects. The Greed shrine is the only outlier in this category, as it provides no benefit in combat outside the movement speed increase. Instead, it does cause enemies to drop sums of gold upon being hit by player attacks. Asgold is one of the major investments inDiablo 4’s endgame, this shrine is practically invaluable in the endgame - or at least it should be.

A large section of the player base is not exactly happy with the functionality of the Greed Shrine in higher world tiers, with the Shrine effect dropping paltry sums of currency being the biggest concern. As it stands, players have to invest significant amounts of gold and other resources to obtain usable gear in the endgame. A post on theDiablo 4subreddit by a player named Chesterumble has garnered over 3800 upvotes, showcasing an amusing meme to denote the power disparity between Greed and the other Shrine effects. The post’s title explains that Greed Shrines should either be reworked or replaced with some other effect.
This isn’t the first timeDiablo 4players have asked for a change to existing and underperforming game mechanics, as shortly after launch, the XP gain from Nightmare Dungeons became a hotly debated topic. Blizzard addressed the issue openly and informed players that a fix was on the horizon. True to its word,Blizzard released the 1.0.3 patch forDiablo 4that adjusted the XP gain from Nightmare Dungeon and added extra quality-of-life changes to the system. The changes so far have been received quite warmly by the player base, but as more and more players approach the endgame, the community outlook on gold has become a primary concern.
AsDiablo 4slowly approaches its seasonal phase with Season Oneon the horizon, the call for Blizzard to address major community concerns is steadily growing. However, Blizzard’s clear communication and prompt addressing of critical issues should give players some confidence that issues like the Greed shrine will be addressed.
Diablo 4is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
