Made by Bethesda subsidiary Alpha Dog,Mighty Doomis a top-down shooter whose adorable visual style is inspired by the collectible toys fromDoom Eternal, the last mainline installment in the iconic franchise which id Software put out in 2019. The game has finally left its prolonged beta status on March 21, when it became available for download globally on both Android and iOS. Apple users appear to have been eager to play it, asMighty Doomalready made its way to the top 10 games in the App Store’s Adventure category, seizing the number nine spot within 24 hours of releasing. While its iOS user reviews are still scarce, early player impressions are overwhelmingly positive and seem to coincide with thousands of five-star reviews authored by Android gamers over the last two years.

Despite its chibi-like aesthetic and shift to a top-down perspective,Mighty Doomdoes its best to maintain the essence ofclassicDoomgames, encouraging players to keep moving and shooting. The developers also claim that doing so has never been easier, pointing to the game’s one-touch control scheme and portrait-oriented action that make it suitable for playing on the go. Like most casual mobile games,Mighty Doomis a free-to-play title with a variety of in-app purchases that allow players to speed up their progression by offering instant item unlocks. Since many of those IAPs were disabled during beta, the jury is still out on whether the game’s fully unleashed monetization practices affect the overall gameplay experience.

Mighty Doomclearly does little to appeal to the series' existing fandom, although anyone interested in a more hardcore portable experience always has the option of playing the mobile ports of the original games. Namely,DoomandDoom 2have been available on Android and iOS for years now, retailing at $4.99 each.

Mighty Doomis just a spin-off and thus not necessarily indicative of what’s next for the long-running franchise, thus being comparable to the likes ofThe Elder Scrolls: BladesandFallout Shelter. That said,Bethesda’s next mobile game will reportedly be less casualthan any one of those titles.
