A dedicated modder has released a new version of their visual fidelity enhancement patch forControl, improving the game’s graphics even further still. While Remedy Entertainment’s first major foray into the sub-genre of New Weird has been notable for a number of reasons, the game has always been an impressive graphical showcase, too, and unofficial patches are looking to continue this trend.

Controlhas been making the rounds as a prime example of ray tracing done right ever since it first launched back in 2019, and though it’s been almost four years since that day, it stands out even when compared to many modern examples of RT. Certain aspects of the game’s visuals have grown outdated, of course, but modders have discovered that it is possible to upgrade some of them by a fair margin.

The most prominent of these patches comes from the modder filoppi, who’s been hard at work improvingControl’s support for modern rendering techniques. While many are bound to already be looking forward to theannounced sequel toControl, filoppi’s comprehensive “Control - HDR+Ultrawide+DLSS+RT Patch” mod may be just the nudge some need to jump back into the Remedyverse one more time. As its title plainly implies, filoppi’s mod focuses on improving all the key features ofControl’s visual fidelity. Users can expect substantially improved ray tracing and reduced ghosting issues thanks to an upgraded version of DLSS, and those who own an HDR-ready monitor can enjoy improved color accuracy, brighter highlights, and better image contrast.

Filoppi’s work doesn’t stop at advanced ray tracing and upscaling features, it’s worth pointing out. Their patch also adds a new option that improves texture streaming speed, as well as support for arbitrary aspect ratio, which is going to be a huge boon for 32:9 screen users. WhileControl 2does need to improvein many respects, its technical aspects haven’t yet been brought up, and it’s going to be interesting to see how far the developer might push its graphics. It’s possible that filoppi’s upgradedControlmight be able to stand toe-to-toe with the sequel in the end.

If Remedy Entertainment ends up reusing large batches of code for theupcoming multiplayerControlgame, filoppi’s work may well end up being leveraged in some of Remedy’s future games, too. This, however, will depend entirely on how interchangeable the games' file bases end up being and shouldn’t be an expectation.

One thing that many fans agree on is thatControl 2needs to lean more towards SCPthan the original game does. Remedy Entertainment has shown that it has the know-how to properly pull off an SCP-like experience. By delving harder into SCP-type capture and containment procedures, Remedy might end up producing an even more compelling New Weird experience.

Controlis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
