Square Enix and Limited Run have made it official: theGex Trilogyis being revived and updated for modern gaming platforms, thanks to the developer’s proprietary game porting technology. Though they’ve been out of the limelight for a very long time now, theGexgames were some of the most notable 3D mascot platforming games of their era, making them an important part of gaming history.
Though it’s already been almost two years sinceSquare Enix filed a newGextrademark, it appears that it’s taken some time for the project to start properly cooking. It’s worth pointing out that the originalGextitles were developed by none other than Crystal Dynamics, a studio that is better known for its laterLegacy of KainandTomb Raiderofferings, withGexhaving been left by the wayside for a while now.

WithSquare Enixspearheading the project, Limited Run is now confirmed to be developing a way to play all three originalGexgames on modern platforms. This means fans will be able to replayGex,Gex: Enter the Gecko, andGex 3: Deep Cover Geckowithout having to resort to emulation and the like. Notably, Limited Run will leverage its Carbon Engine development tool to modernizeGexfor contemporary sensibilities. Some of the other titles that used the Carbon Engine includeShantaeandRiver City Girls Zero, both of which perform well on modern platforms.
With howfew classic games are commercially available nowadays, it’s a great sign forGexfans that the franchise is finally being revived in an official capacity. In fact, with Square Enix backing the project, odds are good that Limited Run will have all the resources it needs to do a solid job of porting the games over to modern hardware, with the only question that remains being the specific extent of their modernization.
ThoughSquare Enix should remaster many classic gamesthat have stuck around in its repertoire, odds are good that few would’ve considered addingGexto the list. It is a curious addition, to be sure, but it’s likely to be roughly in line with the recent release ofKlonoa Phantasy Reverie Seriesby Bandai Namco, which has proven to be a very popular choice for retro-minded gamers.
It is interesting to see just how open Square Enix seems to be to classic franchise remakes and remasters, as the publisher may have realized how much good faith it can garner from its older audiences. Some fans have taken this to the next level, asking Square Enix about aXenogearsRemasterspecifically, and though the studio didn’t want to commit to anything at the time, the fact that the interest is there could make the higher-ups consider their options.
TheGex Trilogyis currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
