Bruce Campbell recently hinted that he’d love to reprise his role as Ash in a potentialEvil Deadanimated series. However, the project is facing one particularly gruelling challenge involving Sam Raimi.

Campbell made a name as his famous Deadite-fighting character Ash Williams, hero of theEvil Deadfranchise that began in 1981 with the first film’s release. Campbell has played his famous role on the big screen and small, through sequels, includingEvil Dead IIandArmy of Darkness, and the Starz seriesAsh vs. the Evil Deadthat wrapped in 2018. With a new film in the franchise titledEvil Dead Risecoming next monthwithout the series’ famous protagonist, Campbell is excitedly discussing a potential animated series and reprising his voice role. There is only one problem–the popularity and busy schedule ofEvil Deadcreator Sam Raimi these days.

While discussions are open on an animated series, Campbell recently toldBloody Disgustingthat while Raimi is interested in making theEvil Deadproject happen, he’s a really busy guy. “All I can say is we’re actively pursuing it. Sam’s a busy guy. He had a big hit movie, so he’s got a lot on his plate, but he and his brother are actively shaping out the world," Campbell said. “It’s one thing to get an animator and say, ‘Hey, animate this!’ You’ve got to know what you’re going to animate.”

Campbell has backed away from his famousEvil Deadrole in the past decade, which he feels becomes more challenging to perform as he ages, with the series making high-energy demands on its cast with lots of combat action. While Campbell has retired physically from Ash, reprising a voice in an animated series is definitely something he would be up for. “I look forward to it, because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have,” he said. Similarly, Campbell recently reprised the role ofAsh for last year’sEvil Dead: The Game.

While it remains to be seen if Raimi can fit the series in among his current projects, which include producingEvil Dead Riseand65, a futuristic dinosaur thriller also due out this year, fans of the franchise, and its star performer, are eagerly waiting for a spot in the prized horror director’s schedule. With the new film soon to hit theaters and possibly gain renewed attention and fans, an animatedEvil Deadseries would be a great addition to the franchise.
