Summary

Baldur’s Gate 3is full of customization options for players looking to create their own unique experience, which has helped it quickly become a serious Game of the Year contender. Between the character creation options at the start of the game, the in-game dialogue choices, and the diversity of loot and gear players can obtain,Baldur’s Gate 3has some of the best customization options in an RPG to date. However, there is one piece of gear that represents the pinnacle of fashion in the game and serves as an excellent piece of endgame loot as well.

The piece of gear in question is the Cloth of Authority worn by Enver Gortash, one of the main antagonists ofBaldur’s Gate 3. Gortash is one of the Chosen Three who leads theCult of the Absolutealongside Ketheric Thorm and Orin the Red, who the player will encounter along their journey. As the Chosen of Bane, God of Tyranny, Gortash uses his cunning and charm to gain power and influence within Baldur’s Gate, eventually using the power of his Netherstone to certify himself as the new Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate.

How Gortash’s Cloth of Authority Embodies Power and Fashion in Baldur’s Gate 3

While there are plenty of fashionable pieces of gear inBaldur’s Gate 3, none are as representative of the style potential the game holds as Gortash’s Cloth of Authority. This Rare Clothing item can only be obtained as drop onGortash’s body after defeating him in Act 3. While some players may choose to ally with Gortash when prompted during his quest line, it may be better to kill him simply to gain the Cloth of Authority because it boasts some excellent abilities that will come in quite handy during many of the endgame battles.

Despite being categorized as a clothing item with a base Armour Class of only 10, the Cloth of Authority can be incredibly useful in many late game battles. The Dauntless ability comes in handy as many late-game foes have the ability to inflict Fear on players and their party, so mitigating this condition with the Cloth of Authority can make or break a fight. Additionally, having Authority give charactersAdvantage on Intimidation and Insight checkscan often help bypass difficult fights altogether.

These effects are an enticing enough reason to claim the Cloth of Authority from Gortash, but this outfit also is one of the best looking pieces of clothing in the game as well. The citizens of Baldur’s Gate have a taste for fashion, as is evident from the popularity of Facemaker’s Boutique within the city. WhileFigaro “Facemaker” Pennygoodmay offer some stylish threads, none of his wares compare to the Grand Duke’s wardrobe, and this is clear by this item’s ability to project power and intimidate foes with its Dauntless and Authority abilities.

The Cloth of Authority is great for characters that players want to go all-in on Intimidation and Insight with since Authority can help enhance these skills, but it is also great for stealthy characters who want to avoid the movement penalties associated with some emotion-altering conditions. ARogue likeBaldur’s Gate 3’s Astarionis a great choice to wear this outfit since he is only proficient with Light Armor and mostly utilizes Sneak Attacks, which can become ineffective if suffering from Fear. Taking down a Chosen like Gortash might be tough, but seeing the quest to gather all three Netherstones to the end is worth it if only to obtain this fantastic clothing item.

Baldur’s Gate 3is available now on PC and PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S version also in development.
