ThePokemonfranchise has 18 types and counting main series entries, 28 different starterPokemon, but there are still a few types that have not been represented by starter evolutions. With the exception of Electric-type Pikachu inPokemon Yellow, all starter Pokemon start out as either Grass, Fire, or Water-types (with Bulbasaur actually being Grass/Poison-type). Sometimes starter Pokemon keep this static typing through their evolution line, but other times they add a second typing to the mix.

This happened as early as theGeneration 1Pokemongames, with Fire-type starter Charmander eventually evolving into Fire/Flying-type Pokemon Charizard. As the generations have gone by, more starter Pokemon have started out with one type only to end up with two by the time they reach their final form, though three Pokemon types have yet to be represented in starter evolution lines.

This was pointed out by Reddit user RoseTraveler27, who remindedPokemonfans that there has yet to be any starter evolutions to add Bug, Rock, or Ice to their Grass/Fire/Water-typing. Meanwhile, only one starter Pokemon evolution has added Psychic-type to the mix, that beingFire/Psychic-type Delphox fromPokemon X and Y, while Piplup’s evolved form Empoleon is the only starter evolution to add Steel-type. Not only that, but Empoleon remains the only Water/Steel-type in the entirePokemonfranchise.

There are a couple of caveats with this information that somePokemonfans might point out. While some would say that there has never been a Dragon-type evolution for any starter evolutions,Mega Charizard X is a Fire/Dragon-type. Others will say that Eevee’s evolutions would satisfy the Ice-type requirement, but Eevee was only a starter Pokemon inPokemon Let’s Go Eevee, which is not really considered a main series entry.

TheGeneration 10Pokemongamescould very well fill the gap and come up with starter Pokemon evolutions that incorporate Bug, Rock, and Ice-types, but that remains to be seen. There are also rumors thatPokemon Scarlet and Violetcould bring back Mega Evolutions, and if so, that could open the door for starters to get new forms that add Bug, Rock, and Ice-types to the mix. Official information on the Generation 10Pokemongames and potentialPokemon Scarlet and VioletDLC is unavailable at the time of this writing, however.

The future of thePokemonfranchise is largely a mystery at this point, but that could change in the near future. The Pokemon Company traditionally hosts a specialPokemonevent in February to mark the franchise’s anniversary, and it’s possible such an event will take place next month to shine a light onPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s DLC plans, at the very least.
